When looking to purchase health insurance there are some questions you will need to know the answers to that will help you determine which is the best plan for you and your family.

What Type of Plan Is This? – Is it a HMO or a PPO

These are 2 very different plans and it is important to know the difference. HMO’S tend to cost less but all your care is manages by your primary care physician resulting in needing a referral to see a specialist. The PPO’s tend to have larger networks, and in some cases will cover out of network services.  There are other differences but it is important to pick which one is better suited to your needs.

Is My Current Provider Included In Your Plan?  Out of network VS In network

                It is best to find out if your current health service providers are in the network of your potential health insurance provider.  In Network means the provider has an agreement with the insurance to accept rates that have been negotiated. Out of Network means they have no such agreement

What Will My Monthly Premiums Be?

You want to be sure that you know all costs involved. Different plans have different premiums.

What’s My Deductible?

A deductible is the amount you will have to pay before coverage starts. Usually, the higher the deductible the lower the premium.

What’s My Copayment?

Some plans have a copayment. This is a flat fee per service or a percentage of the cost such as 80%-20%. The insurance company pays 50% of the cost and you pay 20%

What Are My Restrictions on Pre-Existing Conditions?

If you have a pre-existing condition it is best to find out if it is covered and if there is a waiting period before it is covered. Some plans may not cover certain pre-existing if they are not part of the Market Place.

Am I Covered When I Am Traveling?

                Some plans do not cover you if you are traveling domestically. Some do but consider it out of network. For international travel there are specific plans that you can purchase to cover you when traveling outside of the US.
