You Can Go Broke if You Don’t Have Health Insurance.

Accidents happen, and they happen just as frequently to people in their twenties as anyone else. Let’s say you take a ski trip with the money you should be spending on health insurance, and while gliding down the slopes, you hit something. An unseen rock, perhaps a tree that had low limbs, came between you and the selfie you were taking while skinning. Now you have a broken leg or worse and no insurance.  Sure, a hospital won’t turn you away if you are injured, but they also won’t be treating you for free. Medical bills can pile up quickly without insurance. Emergency rooms charge for every doctor who sees you, for every x-ray, and can charge high prices for little things such as a box of tissues or the latex gloves everyone put on who examined you.  Your credit can quickly take a hit when the healthcare provider who treated you turns all those unpaid medical bills over to an insurance agency. Having a bad credit score can prevent you from things like getting a mortgage for your first home or leasing a car. When you don’t have health insurance, you are gambling with your future financial well-being.

You Won’t Prevent Health Issues Before They Happen Without Health Insurance.

One of the most important things about having quality health insurance is that you have access to things like free physicals and preventive medicine. Early detection a condition or disease can mean the difference between life and death. According to the Guardian, a study in the UK conducted between 1996 and 2000 suggested that detecting cancer at stage one increased survival rates of ten years or more by 90% while those who had their cancer detected at a later stage only had a 5% survival rate of ten years or more. Detection of a condition such as an aneurysm can let physicians determine a course of treatment to extend your life, left untreated it would undoubtedly end your life. Then there are things such as vaccinations that keep you from getting sickness you would be susceptible to without them. With preventive health care, a doctor can put you on medication for diabetes that if left untreated could mean the loss of a limb. Having health insurance means that you will have a healthier future.

You Won’t Have Access to Mental Health Professionals.

It is possible that you may experience a traumatic event in your life or witness one up close, and it will leave mental scars that are just as damaging as physical ones. Having health insurance lets you get treatment for issues like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) if you experience trauma, or grief counselling if you lose a loved one who you were close with. Too many young people struggle with mental health issues that can one day fester into an alcohol or drug addiction. Having health insurance means you can get the help you need now if you have a psychological issue that needs to be addressed.
